People ignore design that ignores people. And Google is very picky with great user experience when it comes to websites.
Every year Google updates their strategies for SEO professionals, marketers, and business owners to make the most of the web. These updates affect SEO for the better or the worse. For the year 2020, they came out with something called Core Web Vitals. There’s going to be a Google update around this, which could either boost your rankings or damage them.
Worry not! I’ll be talking about Web Vitals and how they affect your website’s rankings. Along with some pointers that would help your website rank better by optimizing for the same.
Why Web Vitals?
Google has always focused on making it easier for people to search and consume content on the web. Websites with good UX rank better. They have come out in the past with various metrics that help with the site’s SEO. Be it page speed analytics or if the website is mobile-friendly, all add up to a better UX.
Time spent at home these days must be sometimes really fast or really slow. When it comes to the speed of webpages, Chrome launched the Core Web Vitals a couple of months ago. It provides foundational metrics that focus on the features of more fluid web interaction.
What is Web Vitals anyway?
A set of metrics that allows site owners to assess their performance and to optimise them accordingly. All the chrome dev tools that help with SEO will have Web Vitals integrated into them (Lighthouse, Page Speed Insights, etc). These will help with a faster page load and a much better way to consume data from that website.
The metrics will evolve but it currently focuses on loading, interactivity, and visual stability. There are 3 metrics included in the CWV(Core Web Vitals), which is a subset of Web Vitals:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) indicates the first few contents that get loaded for a website. The metric focuses on first contentful paint that loads the first.
- FID (First Input Delay) measures the interaction between users while they first communicate with the page. It helps show the user experience in terms of numbers and figures to analyze and further optimize it.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) indicates all the obnoxious changes in the layout that hampers a web experience.
Measuring and Improving your Web Vitals
Web Vitals are essential to all web interactions. Webmasters can directly analyze their web vitals from the Search Console. This will allow site owners to analyze data without having to manually set up analytics on their side.
The next step is to identify where and what to improve your SEO estimates for the metrics. Go through the documentation and API libraries to optimize LCP, FID, and CLS scores.
As the web evolves annually, Google aims at evolving alongside developers with tools that make your websites excellent. Your website is an extension of your brand and it should reach out to your customers in the best way possible. And for that, you need to rank better.
With lesser loading speeds, faster first input loading, your website experience will be top-notch for your visitors.
